August Maker of the Month!!!

I still cant believe the support Ive had from the wonderful Fiona and James at Concrete Wardrobe in Edinburgh.

They support new designers in their early days to showcase their work and are great at giving advice too. Ive known James for a few years now (he was one of my tutors at Dundee College) and Fiona let me loose in her studio for my third year placement, so when I was asked to be their Maker of the Month I was so honoured. I created lots of colourful accessories for fashion and interiors and filled their window with colour – its no secret that I love colour.

Above are a few images of what to expect if you can get along.

Edinburgh International Fashion Festival

Ive had a wonderful start to the week attending the Edinburgh International Fashion Festival in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh. I was part of the the Duncan of Jordanstone group who were invited by Anna and Jonathan Freemantle to show how design starts it process. Myself and 3 recent graduates Catherine Anna and David took along sketchbooks and mood boards to show how our work started its journey along with some finished pieces.

“Heading into its third year, the Fashion Festival is making an impressive mark on the international fashion scene, engaging with the industry and the city in a fresh, innovative way.

Expect runway shows, exhibitions, gala parties, interactive workshops and talks in some of the most unique and beautiful venues in Edinburgh including the National Museum of Scotland, Gayfield Creative Spaces, the Queen’s Gallery and the Assembly Rooms. International luminaries will sit alongside local heroes as the Fashion Festival engages the industry and general public in original, thought-provoking ways.”

We were there with the best in Scottish Design; Naromode, Dunmore of Scotland, Jacob Birge, Saunt & Sinner, Obscure Couture, Common People Clothing, Hancock, Pringle of Scotland, Helen Ruth Scarves, Joyce Paton, Godiva Boutique, Hilary Grant, Catherine Aitken, Di Gilpin, Rosie Sudgen, Euan McWhirter, Judy Clark, Bebaroque, Jane Gowans, Cameron Taylor, Cahoon, Noble headwear, Karon Mabon, Prints of Paradise, Walker Slater, 21st Century Kilts, Brora and Strathberry of Scotland.

I managed to attend  talks given by Mark Hogarth, Creative Director of Harris Tweed and James J W Macleod, co-founder of Vincent Maxwell who spoke about bespoke  and artisan crafting, he really struck a cord with me as I dye, print and make all my own products.

On Tuesday I met royalty, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall came to visit, She spoke to everyone in the Makers Market and a little later the DJCAD team spoke with her privately about craft and design within our college, it was a real honour to meet her .
