A little bit about Judy

Judy is a printed textile designer based in Dundee. Arriving in Scotland in the early 70s its harbour villages and shores have been her constant inspiration. Their bustling waterfronts are filled with incredible colour combinations, organic shape, surface and form.

The creative process plays an important role in creating fresh and sophisticated designs intended for the modern contemporary interior.

Blending traditional techniques with digital imagery her work begins by capturing inspiration as a composition using photography.

This is then translated into painted paper collage and expressive mark making, leading to bold placement compositions.

The development continues until a final surface design is created, this is transferred by hand onto cloth though hand cut stencils and silkscreen printing to make lampshades, cushions and art prints, in bold bright colour with abstract composition – striking pieces for interiors.

Judy is currently researching digital print making as a way to capture her hand made marks and collages, to create products that are more environmentally friendly in terms of the water used to dye and print each of her pieces.

Judy is a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone and spent a year as Designer in Residence in the textile department. She is very happy to say that she now works there as the textile technician teaching the skills needs to hand dye and screen print fabric.

“Judy’s work has been included in Selected as a bold, beautiful and consummate example of original Scottish textile” Selected 2014
